Wheatens On The Red (WOTR) is a club for Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier owners and their friends who live in Winnipeg, the Red River Valley and Northwestern Ontario. Although considered a local club, WOTR is pleased to have members from all over Canada and the United States. WOTR was started in August 1993 in order to provide opportunities for people to have fun with their dogs and meet other Wheaten owners. We are also concerned with Wheaten health and want to be part of preserving and improving the breed.

Club Activity - Canadian Good Neighbour
Members have expressed an interest in participating in the Canadian Good Neighbour (CGN) program. This is a Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) activity open to all dogs. Upon successful completion of the program, participants receive a CKC certificate. Behaviours such as coming when called, reaction to other dogs, reaction when left with someone other than the handler are some of the areas covered.
If there is sufficient interest we would like to offer classes in CGN to our Wheaten members. The classes would run for 6 weeks - Sunday afternoons - with the 6th week being the challenge. Cost for this course is $60 per Wheaten, with an additional fee to cover the cost of the challenge (to be determined). If you would like to participate in this club activity or require more information, please contact Maureen Baziuk, WOTR Secretary at: rmbaziuk@mts.net. Please note we require a minimum of 10 Wheatens to run this activity.

Ed. note: I search out off-leash places where our Wheaten Toby and I can walk.
One of our favourite trails, especially in the fall, is the Trans Canada Trail (TCT). We prefer the section that is west of the
perimeter highway. If you start there you can walk west for several miles, as far west as Beaudry Park. First there is a mile+ of crushed stone, then a length of turf with trees and bush on both sides, and then the path starts again. In the fall of 2007 the route, which did run straight across a wheat field, was changed and a crushed stone path following a small stream was constructed in its place - excellent! Interestingly, as you meet Taillieu road you are walking along a private runway. The trail rejoins its westerly direction and passes south of Breezy Bend golf course. There is usually a wind; in the summer it is hot and slows you down, and in the winter it can be a challenge. But it is quiet and if you're lucky you will see deer as there are several herds in the area.
The above picture shows the new path and in the distance you can see the rejoin as a cut in
the woods.
How to get there (picture on the right): Take Roblin Blvd, Hall Road is 1.6km west of the Perimeter.
Turn South and the TCT is 1.3km down a 4 season gravel road. You can walk miles in either direction. Best time is in the summer or fall. Avoid the path in this area after a rain!
In the spring of 2009 signposts were erected the path's name is: Headingley Grand Trunk Trail and it is a 'spur' of the Trans Canada Trail.
There is something very Canadian about walking on the flat prairies in a straight line. After a while the highway noise disappears and you hear only the wind, the long CN freight trains to the south and depending on the season, flocks of geese and ducks winging north or south. Great V's southbound signalling winter is not far away and then months later perhaps the same V's northbound announcing that spring is indeed on the way. Good reason to have a Wheaten to walk.
To the fine citizens who work at and for the Trans Canada Trail do a great job - thanks!
