NOTE: Starting with the 2007 WOTR picnic, this webpage is both 56k friendly and DSL friendly. When this page is accessed, pictures with red corners will downloaded and those pictures can be displayed as two larger pictures.

   - To view a larger 56k friendly image click on the right half of the image and a medium-sized medium resolution picture will be downloaded.
   - To view a large DSL friendly image click on the left half of the image and a large high resolution picture will be downloaded.

Note that as you move the mouse across any image the address will change and the last three letters before .jpg will indicate the type of image; _56k or _dsl. As well, leaving the mouse over an image for several seconds will cause another size message to appear. I chose this method as many if not most pictures deserve to be seen in a larger format. Resizing for webpage display does not do them justice. When you have finished viewing the larger image(s), press BACK on your browser.

To view an example of these images check the picture on the left. The "right" half of the picture addresses a Med/Med res image (700x470 res 6/12= 113k). The "left" half of the picture address a Large/Hi res image (1024x687 res 12/12= 486k).

2015 October Wind-up at Assiniboine Park
We had another great day for our last walk of the year and wind-up at Assiniboine Park on Sunday, October 18. It was so wonderful to have so many Wheaties on the walk - Fergus, Darby, Molly, Muggins, Teagen, Kelly, Sandi and our newest members Patty E Kakes & Ruff McDuff. It never ceases to amaze me how well all the Wheatens get along, they are just so happy to see one another. With such a parade of beautiful dogs, we had lots of compliments along the walk. Thank you to Gail and Ray for the cupcakes and Tim's Coffee & Tea. Was great to visit with everyone on a lovely fall afternoon.
Thank you to all of the members who came out for the walks this year. Your support is greatly appreciated! We haven't typically scheduled walks in the winter but we were thinking that this year, if there is a milder Sunday in the forecast, we'll send an email to the membership and if you are able to, please join Ron & I for a brisk winter walk. We all know how much the Wheatens love the cooler/colder weather! If we're not able to connect, have a great winter and we will look forward to seeing you next spring!       Maureen & Ron Baziuk

2010 May WOTR Walk & Picnic
It was a beautiful sunny and warm day for our first club event of the year the annual Wheaten Walk Kickoff and BBQ held at Kildonan Park.
We had an awesome turnout of 31 people along with 18 beautiful wheatens. All were well behaved including the people. Eileen took us on a lovely walk through the park. We followed a path that runs along the river than up to the witch’s hut where many children and adults admired our dogs and continues along side the duck pond. During our journey we encountered many people who stopped to watch us pass. It’s not every day that you see a group of 12 or more wheatens walk together! We returned to our picnic area to find cooks Gord and Ray busy preparing hamburgers and hot dogs for us along with all the trimmings. We also had a great potato salad and a yummy carrot cake both prepared by our amazing activities coordinator Suzanne. Evan won the candy bowl contest while every dog received a braided fleece chew toy to take home. I think it is safe to say that all had a good time.
Huge thanks go out to Eileen for leading the walk to Suzanne for all the food preparation and the work required to make the event happen and to Gord and Ray for ensuring all the burgers and dogs were grilled to perfection.
Thanks all to everyone who helped prepare the site so the rest of us could enjoy the day. You all did an awesome job!

2009 September WOTR Picnic
The sun shone, that in itself was brilliant.
          The Venue was brilliant.
          The Dogs were brilliant.
          The Food was above brilliant.
It was a wonderful afternoon, we were truly blessed. I was really a bit doubtful that morning when I looked out the sunroom window, having been rudely woken early by the evil Wheaten Wannabe. I said to all the critters as I let them out one by one; "Kids I think were in Vancouver, where are your rain boots." By the afternoon the sun was out and everything had dried up. So off we went.
We had a wonderful turn out of oldies, and lots of new people, that is wonderful, love to see the new people. They always have such great ideas.
There was a total of 23 people and 15Wheatens, 1 Golden and a Norwich, and everyone got along.
A visit from the very chic looking Shani at thirteen years young, she is in such great shape her coat is soft and wavy, eyes bright, she made the rounds of the grounds with no problems. What a delight for me that was. We also had a visit from four month old Iggy and his parents. Fun to watch a baby react to a herd of the big kids. He never missed a beat.
I would like to thank our Host and Hostess for letting us enjoy their beautiful home and amazing property. I hope that we didn’t do too much damage. Suzanne, the lunch was worth the trip, Lasagnas, salad, goodies out of her garden, and saving the best for last, the Carrot Cake and Ice Cream. Thank you so much for all the time and effort that went into making this day memorable.
Ray Litke won the second carrot cake, and the membership for the coming year was won by Judy Restall and family. I was able to research the Free Press for the recipe that Suzanne used, it is included in the fall newsletter. Do try this if you like carrot cake.       Joanne Racey deJong

Again this year the Wayne and Suzanne hosted this event. The weather was "iffy" so this year's turnout was smaller than usual, nontheless another fun and entertaining Agility Day.    (Phil G)

2009 May Wheaten Walk Kick-Off & BBQ
This year we were graced with a beautiful Spring day – sunny with a perfect walking temperature and a gentle breeze. Thirteen Wheatens and their families and friends gathered at Kildonan Park for our Walk.
Eileen guided us through the west end of the Park, through the still sleeping gardens and over the foot bridge. We paused long enough to take a few pictures, then strolled on. Upon return to the shelter, Raymond had the fire going and things lined up for our wiener roast.
It was terrific to see so many of our Members, with and without their Wheatens, come to the commencement of our monthly walks. Congratulations to Ev’s sister, Janey from British Columbia, who won the Candy Draw!     Hope to see you at the next walk! (Gail Litke)

2009 Grooming Lessons
On April 14, TULLY and his family (David, Lesey and children Carolyn and Cameron), and MAGGIE and her mom, Suann DeC, attended a grooming seminar given by Gail L. After a frenzied first few minutes for the usual Wheaten greetings the session got under way with Gail explaining the various grooming tools, equipment and products needed, such as grooming tables, slicker brushes and pre-brushing sprays. Gail’s Wheaten, TROOPER, was also there to help demonstrate grooming techniques. Gail then proceeded to show TULLY and MAGGIE’s families how to brush out their dogs, giving hands on help when needed.
A second session was held the following evening for SHEENA and her family, Shelley and daughter, Moira. This session, a repeat of the first, went just as well, and seemed to be greatly appreciated by Shelley and Moira.
The sessions were a success and could possibly be offered again next year.

2008 September WOTR Picnic
Hi! My name is SODA BISCUIT, but my masters just call me SODA. I love to eat, run, eat, play with my sister, Whiskey, and eat. I really love treats, especially the dried liver ones. Last Sunday, my masters had a whole bunch of people over for the annual Wheatens on the Red fall picnic. They spent the previous week worrying about the weather; they could have saved themselves a few grey hairs and asked me, because I knew it would be warm and mostly sunny, but not too hot.
The day before the picnic, my mistress, Suzanne, got busy in the kitchen and some yummy smells began wafting throughout the house. In two shakes of a lamb's tail, I was slobbering all over the floor and got sent out to the back yard. Did I mention that I love to eat? At night, I always dream of food and chasing squirrels.
The next day, the guests began to show up around 1 pm. There was Magnum and MUGGINS, FERGUS, GULLIVER, SAGE, RUSTY, TARA, ZOE, and GABBY and JAYDA. Oh, and their masters came, too: Gail and Kimberly, John and Anthea Eileen and Ivy, Ruth, Dolores, Helen and Alex, Laurie, and Linda and Gordon.
WHISKEY and I ran, played, jumped and frolicked, and had a gay old time just getting to know our canine guests better. TARA was having a bit of an off day and wasn't in the mood to play, which was OK. There were races, too. First, some of our masters got to kick these little white balls all the way to the spruce tree and back again. They wouldn't let us take them, no matter how much we tried. To me, they looked like hard-boiled eggs - my favourite! Kimberly Forest and MUGGINS ran against Camelia and RUSTY. The girls got neat prizes and the dogs got treats. Then, John and FERGUS, Wayne and I, Gordon and GABBY and Alex and TARA got a kick at the golf balls. Boy, were they ever competitive! John Wayne, or rather, John and Wayne and their dogs won the first heat, followed by Eileen and GULLIVER, Gail and ZOE, and Gordon and JAYDA. Everyone got neat prizes. The three-legged race came next with Gordon, Kimberly and MUGGINS racing against Tracy, Camellia and RUSTY. That race ended in a tie and more prizes. There were weave poles, a tire and jumps for us dogs to try out as well, but we mostly ran and played, which is what we like to do best. There was also a draw for a cookie jar full of dog biscuits, which John and Anthea won and shared with us. A second draw was made for a free one-year membership and Linda and Gordon won that.
Then came the best part of the day - DINNER!! Boy did those cheeseburgers and hot dogs smell good. Our masters weren't very good at sharing, though. They all sat and ate while I and my four-legged friends watched and drooled. By the end of the afternoon, we were all pretty pooped and we lolled around for a bit. About 4 or so, the guests started to leave, which wasn't fun -- I wasn't done playing yet. After they left, I got to have dinner! What a great end to a great day! Thanks to all of my friends, human and canine, for coming and making our annual fall picnic a smashing success.  Can't wait to do it all again soon! Rollcall Ready, Set, Go? Ready?? 2008 June WOTR Agility Day
Held in the park like setting along the Seine River, at the home of Suzanne and Wayne Hoard, our Agility Day was great!
Our afternoon began with eight Wheatens off leash and running through the puppy pool and dashing around the well-fenced yard. We watched from the shade, and waited for the excitement to abate. As the Wheaties slowed down to catch their breath, we took them through the Agility Course.
Sacha, Muggins, Whiskey and Soda dashed through the tunnel and made it part of their game of tag. Fergus was more dignified as he sauntered through.. Seger mastered the weave polls, while Magnum attempted the tire. Sacha proved just how easy the tire was to jump through. Follow the Wheaten through the weave polls was fun for the Wheaties, especially when they received a treat!
In total, we had nine Wheatens with their owners, plus two Members (a total of 12 people) who came out to enjoy the day.
The Wheaten Award for the most regal ------------------------------------- Fergus
The Wheaten Award for the most amorous --------------------------------- Konnor
The Wheaten Award for the most patient/tolerant ------------------------- Sacha
The Wheaten Award for the easiest weave poling ------------------------- Serger
The Wheaten Award for sneaking Judy's water bottle -------------------- Magnum
The Wheaten Award for spending the most time in the pool ------------- Sacha & Muggins
The Wheaten Award for coming even after doing the Paws in Motion Walk - Gulliver
The Wheaten Award for being the Hostesses extraordinaire -----------------Whiskey & Soda
An Honourable Mention goes to Muggins for carrying the cones and anything else she could run away with!!

Suzanne and Wayne treated everyone to a surprise barbecue supper before we left. The food, company and dogs were all great. Everyone enjoyed the activities, and then being able to let their dogs run loose in a very same environment. We really had a nice relaxing afternoon. A special 'Thank You' to Helen and Alex Foster who allowed us to borrow their agility equipment. Hopefully you'll be able to join us for the picnic.           (Eileen O)

2008 May Wheaten Walk Kick-Off
It was cold and wet, it was snowy, and the wind found its way right through you to your bones. The dogs loved it -- their masters not so much! They were a small but brave bunch!
Before heading out that morning, I called the Park Supervisor to find out whether or not there was an electrical outlet at the site and, when he said yes, I immediately packed my 30-cup coffee maker and my tea kettle. With coffee and tea to keep us warm, along with some excellent hot dogs prepared up by our master barbecuer, Ray Litke, the party got off to a good start. Everyone mingled and caught up on the latest news, while the dogs sniffed each other and got into the mud, of course. It was a little too wet and cold for we humans to take our buddies on a long walk so we gathered around the fire. The children raced around an obstacle course for prizes. Then we all had cake and as the fire died we all started gathering our things to make our way home. All in all, it was a good afternoon.
Thanks to one and all for making it a good day and I hope to see you all on June 22 for Agility Day. I promise there will be no snow!  (Suzanne) This is Spring??? More Spring??? FERGUS, WHISKEY, SODA Braving the elements Trying to stay warm

2007 September WOTR Picnic
The annual picnic was held at Kildonan Park Sunday Sep 23rd. Mother Nature once again granted us perfect weather.
Ruth did a great job handling the task of membership renewal and welcome to our new WOTR members. Ivy handled the games and managed the unprecedented feat of having several members of the Wheaten nation hopping across the field with dogs in tow.
Two of the most exciting races of the day were Emily and SIMON racing against Katie and TARA while Adelynne went head to head against Samarah and Dad. At two, Samarah was our youngest race participant. It was fun seeing the smiles and the hair fly as the friendly family competition took place.
Next race was the adult males. Gord, Will and Alex lined up at the start line and three false starts later the race finally happened. There was no perfect hop in this race and the crowd was treated to a fine example of what happens when 3 semi non-athletes are asked to participate in athletic activities. Will skipped, maybe there are too many girls in that family, Gord did a sideward kind of shuffle and Alex did a strange type of dance. It was both fun and painful to watch.
Gail handed out prizes to the youth, Ray started the fire and lunch was served. During lunch the draws were made for the table prizes. Anthea won the Dog Prize draw and Laurie G won the candy count and jar donated by Ruth. After lunch, kites flew and people enjoyed the rest of the afternoon. It was great to see everyone.
This wraps up the 2007 event calendar with the exception of the last walk scheduled for the Forks at 7pm on Oct 17th. We hope everyone enjoyed the events.   (Helen & Ivy)

2007 Agility Day
The Annual WOTR Agility Day was held on Sunday July 8th at Hyland Park. The weather and the site were perfect. Attendance was good with a showing of 20 humans and 18 canines including special guest, LADY, the Golden Retriever. Wheatens ranging from 11 wks old to 8 years of age showed just how agile they can be. For safety sake, there is no jumping for puppies under the age of 18 months.
The course included jumps, tunnels, weave poles and a tire. Everyone had a chance to run the course. NEELU wasn't even thinking about going on course until she properly greeted all her fans in attendance. How 's that for proper Wheaten Etiquette? SIMON was the most improved under the careful direction of Ivy. Gail's puppy MUGGINS is a natural with energy and drive who amused everyone with her antics in the pool. Her owners will have their hands full with that little bundle. MAGNUM her brother is sweet and laid back.
John and Anthea's FERGUS has no trouble with the course. Ruth's SAGE, enjoyed the tunnels. Linda and JAYDA looked good on course as did Gordon with 3 year old CHASE. Of course, GILBERT was the best behaved, some things never change. Donna and Brian's CONNER thought the course was way too easy and the jumps too low so he showed us just how easy he could jump the perimeter fencing. Wayne's WHISKEY had a great time splashing in the pool while CHASE and Tim and Leona's MAGGIE waited in anticipation for their turn. Gwen and Rachel showed up with MAC just in time to join in. Cynthia brought her 11 week old puppy SACHA to check out the WOTR club. I hope everyone had a fun time and enjoyed a really beautiful day.
Special thanks to everyone who helped setup, take down or drove dogs home. I hope to see everyone for the WOTR picnic in September.     (Helen & Ivy)

2007 April Hot Diggity Dog Day
The annual Hot Diggity Dog walk was held on Sunday April 22nd at Kildonan Park. Despite earlier forecast of 90% rain, the weather turned out, just about perfect. Ray saved the day with his Boy Scout training and helped us display the Wheaten Banner proudly. There were at least 30 Members and 17 Wheatens in attendance. We should all be very proud of our dogs as they were all very well behaved. TROOPER & NEELU sat patiently while their pack leaders set up. I guess Obedience does pay off. Wonder what would have happened if a squirrel ran by?
Eileen led us on a 45 minute walk. The walk was fun and the terrain interesting. FERGUS challenged NEELU for Leader of the Pack and others were just happy to be at the end of the line. It was great to see our most distinguished member Dennis accompanied by Christina & Wheatie EMMA. Kelly from Calgary attended her first Wheaten Walk with her dad Phil and Wheatie TOBY. It was good to see Linda, Gord, & Wheatie JAYDA. Nick, Linda, and Laurel along with their Wheatens BAXTER & Cassie arrived just in time to join in on the festivities. Seeing Ev & Glen and their Wheatens MARLEY & SEEGER made my day.
The youngest Wheaten in attendance was WHISKEY who brought Wayne & Suzanne along. Tim won the Dog Bone Contest (lucky MAGGIE) and Sarah won the Jelly Bean contest. The guessing Contests were very close with a couple of guesses off by one number; with the exception of Jacquie, her guesses were not even in the ball park... Better luck next time Jacquie. Hot dogs were cooked over an open fire to perfection or charcoaled, just the way Gail likes them. NEELU challenged TARA to a tunnel race and the third race mother beat daughter. Way to go NEELU. Wheatie MAC wins top marks for his herding skills as he managed to herd Jamie, Grace, Rachel & Sarah of his pack and get them to the walk. This is a very impressive accomplishment as his pack contained teenagers. BISCUIT brought her sister BJ along, proving it is OK to be different. Ron and 11 year old Wheatie SHANI earn the Best Pet Trick Award and the Most Patience Award as the amateur photographer made them repeat the trick about 30 times before her husband Alex captured the photo you see today on the website. Check it out and Bookmark it as a Favorite. It was good to see some familiar faces and to meet new ones. Here's to hoping a Good Time was had by all. This was my 1st experience at organizing anything. Thanks to everyone who helped out.   (Helen F. & Ivy O.)

2006 September WOTR Picnic
The annual picnic was held on September 10, 2006 at Hyland Park, in East St. Paul. This park has been taken over by the R.M. and is now regularly maintained, which made it perfect for our function. It was close to the city, easy to find, and the weather couldn"t have been nicer. Attendance was about the same as that of the previous events, numbering 35 including the wheatens and guest "Lady". Eileen organized and ran the games this year, so thank you. Eileen was assisted by a gentleman named Dennis. He really got into the spirit of things even partnering up with daughter Christine and her young wheaten Emma for the foot golf game. Pretty good for one in his eighties!
First time the adults didn"t have to compete with the children for the prizes as there was less this time round. The adults had a great time with some altering of the rules and everyone came out a winner. Young Sadie was excellent in showing her Darby how to go through the tunnel. Didn"t take long before all the wheatens were having a fun time taking turns. Even going through both ends and creating new ways as only Wheatens can. There were prizes for the dogs as well as the children who were there. Lunch was once again hotdogs done over an open fire which seems to be very well received. Everyone tried their hand at cooking their own.
Congratulations to owners of a wheaten puppy who took home a prize, Ian & Barb, daughters Taryn aand Camryn with puppy Finn Shamus O"Malley. At the end, we drew a name for the draw, a shade canopy. The winner was Geri - congratulations!
All in all this year was fun and the events were well attended. (Travis)

2006 June Agility Day
The annual WOTR agility day was held in Oakbank on June 25, 2006 between 1pm and 4pm. There were about twenty people in attendance with their Wheatens. Once again Helen and Jerry were kind enough to allow us the use of both their equipment and back yard for the afternoon, so a big thank you goes out to them. Again the weather was absolutely beautiful for the event, I dare say it was almost too hot, however there were drinks for the people and a small pool for the dogs to play in. the winners were as follows:
Fastest time for an adult - Sage with Bernie
Best family time - Whiskey with Kate, Paul, Rhiannon, Olivia
Slowest time - Shasta with Helen
Most improved time - TT with Gail, Ray
Dog that gave us the biggest laugh - Rocky with Cheryl
Fastest time for a non-adult - Sage with Darren
To all who in attendance, thank you for helping to make this event such a success.      (Travis)

2006 April Diggity Dog Days
On April 30 the annual hot diggity dog walk kick off was held at Kildonan Park. Approximately 27 people and 13 dogs attended. Several people attended without their dogs and I was encouraged to see that those people still came out. Everyone enjoyed the walk although it was a little long for some who doubled back at the half way loop. The weather was absolutely awesome for the walk. I daresay it was hot, and we finished just before the weather took a turn for the worse. We dined on hot dogs cooked over a roaring fire and some people had a roasted marshmallow for dessert. Overall I hope everyone enjoyed the outing and met a few new members Kinnon won the jellybean contest.      (Travis)
