   1959 Hapnot High Yearbook
Plus

Occasionally you manage to keep something from the past. Every time you move it gets packed and put away until a conversation or an item in the newspaper twigs a memory and then out it comes. Such is the case with my 1959 Flinonian. And a bonus - more grad pictures including; Wayne Warren`s 1958 Graduation pictures, Jim Stevens' 1956/57 Graduation pictures and John Hamilton's Grade 2 & 8 pictures .     Latest update: March 11, 2013

While the Flin Flon Heritage Project website contains pdf copies of the Hapnot Flinonian from 1944-1963 (as of Feb 2013), I decided to compile a list of names of students who attended Hapnot High in the '50s. As a start I picked 1955-1956-1957-1958. More years will be added in the future. Any collection of names that appeared some 50+ years ago will contain errors and omissions. In those days if you were absent from school on picture day, well, your name was not indicated by "missing from group" unless you were graduating. Proofreading was also occasionally missed. This is not a reflection on the hard work done by student volunteers. As anyone knows, using paper lists for keeping accurate names etc. is not easy and is prone to errors. To the extent possible I have double checked the names/grades for the years in the spreadsheet.
X    Clicking on the picture on the left will support either downloading or opening a Microsoft Excel (2000) spreadsheet, depending on your computer setup.             Forward additions, errors and corrections to giesph@gmail.com

 From the 1959 Flinonian.

Remember the Sadie Hawkins Dance when girls could ask the guys out?

Sadie Hawkins Day was first mentioned in the November 13, 1937 Li'l Abner strip with the race actually taking place between the November 19th and November 30th strips. It would prove to be an annual event in strip. Sadie Hawkins was the daughter of one of Dogpatch's earliest settlers, Hekzebiah Hawkins. When she reached the age of 35, still a spinster, her father in desperation called together the eligible bachelors of Dogpatch and declared that day to be Sadie Hawkins Dance and that "when ah fires [my gun] all o' yo' kin start a-runnin! When ah fires agin - after givin' yo' a fair start - Sadie starts a runnin'. Th' one she ketches'll be her husband."
Sadie Hawkins Dance captured the imagination of many young people, particularly on campuses. A Life magazine headline reported, in 1939, that "On Sadie Hawkins Dance, Girls Chase Boys in 201 Colleges" and printed pictures from Texas Wesleyan. Many US high schools, especially in the Midwest and South, hold Sadie Hawkins Dance dances. Even some Canadian high schools have these dances once a year. These dances are characterized by girls asking boys for dates, and matching farmer clothes being worn to the dance. In Flin Flon, and likely most Canadian high schools, the girls made elaborate "corsages" for their dates.

Flin Flonners like to return home, especially if it was their first Christmas away.

The Flin Flon Heritage Project (website) is now providing lots of memories of former (and present!) FlinFlonners. My favourite addition so far is a project to scan all of the Hapnot High Flinonian yearbooks into .pdf files. This is a great idea because the complete yearbook is presented, page after page, and you can increase the text size to suit your needs. In early August 2012, John "Benny" Hamilton began scanning and I think the results are IMPRESSIVE! As of February 2013, issues from 1944-1963 are up and clearly shows the potential of this feature. Click here for the Flinonian page on the Flin Flon Heritage Project website.
