People 'n Snaps - the subtitle should almost read "and their names ???"

Memories are great, and pictures of people sort of "way back when" that you can show your children, or your grandchildren - even better! However not all of us wrote the date and the names of the people on the back. Perhaps we believed we would not forget... So where possible the photos on this page will display names and rely on viewers to add more names or in some cases, correct the names.
Memories are best when they are shared.

1948 - (give or take a couple years...) - From Lila Stevens estate, growing up in Flin Flon, on Hill Street, 60 plus years ago - great memories.

Louis Tusz, Bob Sorenson and Jim Stevens looking sharp in their Cub uniforms.

  Likely '48 or '49
George Whitmore, Ken Tusz, Jim Stevens, Hugh Whitmore, Lorna Stevens and John Whitmore playing in the Stevens' yard on Hill Street.

The picture at the Stevens on Hill Street, from the South looking North. The two kids on the sewer box are Bobby Joe and Darlene Delegelangier(sp?) who lived at 21 Hapnot.

  Late 1950's?
Apparently some hockey players (Bombers?) enjoying themselves.

This is a great picture however identifying each girl can be difficult so this image can be viewed differently. By moving your mouse slowly over the picture you can choose between 2 additional images: on the right side, a larger image, on the left side, a larger image with numbers. Keeping that in mind, I will use a numerical listing until the names are complete.

Tom McDougall and Don Mardis at Ron Gilmore's wedding.

Wayne Warren collection

1959 - Ron Gilmore writes: "Doug Clark, Ron Gilmore and Birk Sproxton with our spear-fishing gear. This photo was likely taken in 1959 near the bridge at Baker's Narrows - we would often take off in the summer with our swim fins, snorkels, masks and spearguns trying to gather a mess of Perch, Northern Pike or suckers. Pickerel were very elusive it seems and of course, only the Perch were edible. We fished Big Island, Athapap and Beaver Lake in this fashion. On occasion, we would hike back in the bush to lakes that had no easy access. For the perch, we would often bag one and stuff it in our bathing suit and keep on hunting rather than swim al the way to shore to drop it off. Tom McDougall (not in this photo) was our star swimmer and fisherman with this technique. He could hold his breath much longer than the average person. Ernie (our neighbour in Birchview) was the only guy with a dry suit so he could handle the cold water a lot longer than the rest of us."

1960 - Ron Gilmore with a big 25lb jack caught at the Sturgeon Weir, 1960 on a canoe trip (almost fatal) with Marv Dohan

Brian "Tate" Dowler, Tom McDougall and Doug Clark in front of the Gilmore house in Birchview. Ron Gilmore; "Great picture of the house - it shows a door off of our living room - about 8 feet off the ground - that goes nowhere! We often invited folks to "step outside" along with a polite, "After you"."

Likely 1961, Tom McDougall about to get a "shave", Bob Bowman, Birk Sproxton, Clark Starrie, Bruce Tokel

Ernie "Aqua" Tremblay and Tom McDougall, spearfishing at Big Island of course!

click for bigger image   Circa 1957 - Ron Gilmore writes: "My first pair of water skis - My father made these and we attached the rubber and aluminum foothold harnesses that were ordered through Bell's Hardware on Main Street. I painted the skis myself. Interesting part was putting the curved tips on the skiis - my Dad sliced the tips in half with a thin blade (like slicing a bagel across the width of the wood) and then soaked the tips in hot water. After a while, he took them out and inserted a glue-laden sheet of canvas and put the tips into a clamp affair that forced a curve in the wood. After drying, the clamps were removed and the tips of the skis rounded and voila! A professional looking pair of water skis ready for harnesses. In those days, we made good use of many home-made items."

Circa 1966 - Ron Gilmore writes: "I have been looking for this photo for years and finally came across it and just had to share it with you. This is a picture of Tom (McDougall) at an estate in upper New York State near a place called Saratoga Springs. This was a famous race horse destination for the rich and famous in years gone by. The estate was apparently owned by the author, Edgar Allen Poe. Tom was living in Toronto and I think I was there working for GE at the time. Most weekends, we tried to escape the city. On this trip, Tom and I drove south of Cornwall (no destination in mind particularly) in my 1960 Buick (four door hardtop I might add). We had a fun adventure - including a seized wheel bearing in the back country and of course, a trip to the Poe estate and a classic photo of Tom posing as "The Thinker", which of course, he was!"

1967 - Ron Gilmore's wedding,Trinity United Church, Peterborough, Ontario. And in Ron's words:
right photo (L-R) Orral Gilmore (my older brother, then in the RCMP - you can tell by the haircut), Betty Gilmore (my Mom), Ron Gilmore (complete with the Buddy Holly glasses), Wendy Dantzer (my Child Bride), Marilyn Dantzer (Wendy's Mom), John Plunkett (Wendy's Uncle and Marilyn's brother).
left photo (L-R) Tom Gilmore (my younger brother),Gail Murtha (Wendy's girlfriend from work at General Electric), Cauleen Viscoff (Wendy's best friend), Brian Doughty (Cauleen's husband).

1968 - Merv Larrivee and Arnold Williams, Peterborough canoe race.
From Arnold: "1968 July 1 canoe race from Peterborough to Trenton via the Trent Severne System with 85 locks we had to portage! Merv and I were disqualified, as we rode over a weir to gain 2 positions! By the way, that's my daughter Darlene in the canoe.

pjg: For some reason I always mix up the names Arnold Williams and Glen Arnold. This is my public apology to Glen Arnold...

  1957 - Scouts

Jim Fell, Jim Parres, Brian Kinsley, Arnold Williams (5th Scout group Birchview) were 4 of the 7 from Flin Flon who went to the centennial world scout jamboree, Sutton Colfield, England in August 1957.
Stu Bexton, Bob Calvert, and ?? also represented Flin Flon and together attained "the largest representation per capita" at the world jamboree. All the scouts from Flin Flon were "Queen Scout, Bushman's Thong - highest recognition for remote community in Canada.

(ed. note: Flin Flon a remote community? I don't think we thought so...)

Thanks to Arnold Williams

1957 - Canadian Scouts off to the World Jambouree

Train to Winnipeg, then on to Toronto. Manitoba and NW Ontario contingent departed Toronto by a big Super Constellation aircraft to Heathrow airport, London, England. Not much sleep on the 12 hour flight due to sing songs. I think the stewardesses were very weary on landing...
Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh came to their camp area while touring the 35,000 scouts from world wide, living under tents. The area experienced the worst rain storm in 25 years on August 6, 1957 with over 12,000 getting flooded out. On return to Flin Flon, all were bedridden with the Asiatic flu epidemic.      Thanks to Arnold Williams

w   <<1979 - a serious looking Arnold Williams. Still serious in 2013 >>

Picture on the right taken while he was in Cold Lake, AB with Northern Alberta Region, Scouts Canada,   and still in the Air Force. Medals on his left are Military, and on his right are Scouting.

Far right>> Arnold (although most people call him by his nickname 'Willy") and his friend Ed Doucette. Picture taken at Edmonton City Centre with Buffalo Joe's DC-3 Dakota before the airport closed on Nov 30,2013.     Ron Gilmore & Arnold Williams collection

2007 photo. Regarding a later occasion, Arnold writes:
"I had the honor, as Alberta's Honors and Awards chairman (Scouts), to get to Flin Flon's Phantom Lake and do a surprise presentation to Jim Fell - 'Certificate of 50 Years to Scouts Canada'. Norm Crearar and the canoe team were all there as well. Many of them had been in scouts and to Camp Whitney.
I remember leader Neil 'Baldie' McLennan, principal of Ross Lake school. Cuthbert McNeil was our mentor for the scout's 'Miner's Badge' and spent a lot of time at Camp Whitney upgrading and repairing the facility - those were the days of volunteerism!!!   Thank goodness there was no TV, cell phones, computers, severe rules and regulations by authorities, this allowed us to grow by experimenting, learning with the hard knocks of school (colors were: red, black and blue!). A great bunch of people 'grew up' in Flin Flon and prospered!
     Thanks to Arnold Williams

  Year Unknown - 'Skipper' Jones
... Reverend Walter Jones, remarkable Scout Leader in Birchview, rector of St. Peter's Anglican, and Young People's services in Willowvale after church each Sunday.
Camping, teaching morse code, building canoes, conducting canoe trips to Kississing, snow shoe treks from Baker's Narrows with the stove on toboggan to Camp Whitney. (he)Left Flin Flon and went to Mitchell, South Dakota as a preacher then to Winnipeg after many years as Archbishop of Rupert's Land. Sadly, he passed away due to skiing accident at Seven Flags, Arizona at age of 72 while holidaying with his grandchildren. Members of the 5th Scout Troop (Birchview Scout Hall) attended his funeral at St. John's in Winnipeg. 'GONE HOME'      Thanks to Arnold Williams

  1957 or 58 Scouter/Piper Jim Fell

We lived at 21 Hapnot for several years until 1960. Our next door neighbours were the Tusz', at 19 Hapnot. Jim roomed with the Tusz' and I have good memories of listening to Jim play the chanter in the early evenings and sometimes on a weekend, the skirl of the bagpipes. Jim has been a long time Scouter and Piper - a good citizen.

"... I was planted there on the island of Flin Flon. This is not a complaint. We were isolated but did not know it.
At the same time, we were gaining a sense of rootedness, a sense of being at home. A local pride."
